30 June : Faroes...

30 June

Next day we (Scott and I) rode out to meet with Ollie and Costa at Streymnes, then onto the next petrol station at Northskali. Costa was having a few problems and wanted to clean and check his chain, it appeared to be rubbing due to build-up of dirt and road-grime.  After a hasty cleaning job, Costa, Scott and I East (and North) through the long tunnel in Eysturoy. Then onto the under-sea tunnel between Leirvik and Klaksvik. Then 2 single-lane, very dark and wet tunnels on Bordoy. We had lunch at Vithareithi, but chose not to partake of the local speciality which was a local sea-bird similar to the puffin.  We returned via the scenic route to Muli (Dint), a tiny abandoned village at the northern tip of Bordoy that holiday makers could rent.
On the way back through the tunnels, we didn't have right-of-way and had to pull over into the passing bays. It was so dark in the tunnels that one could not see the edge of the road. As we pulled into one, to let the oncoming traffic pass, I noticed a headlight behind me dip, Costa had dropped his front wheel off the edge of the road and into the drainage channel at the side of the road. I safely put my bike on it's stand (ensuring that I didn't make the same mistake) and went back to assist Costa. It was pitch black and could barely make out a thing. Eventually, I just grabbed his front wheel and pulled it up with all my might, it was down to the axel. Once out of that, we continued on our way, maybe a little slower than previous.
That evening we Cooked with Karsten and Ollie returned as he couldn't find a camping spot.
We four plus Ju (german cyclist we'd met previously) headed into Torshavn. There was a music festival happening, but of course all the tickets were sold-out. Most of the harbour area was blocked off and the walk around took quite a while, not that Torshavn was that big. I even tried to convince the girls on the barricade that Karsten was my grandfather and today was his birthday, We almost had them convinced, but someone started laughing, So walking had to suffice.
We headed for the Irish pub, with no music. We managed to get the staff to put something on, canned 80's music...could have been worse.
But, to our surprise, later on was live music - singer, writer, guitarist. We all loved it, the music was great and we were pretty toasted. It was a reasonably late night and I left early (due to a disagreement with Scott) and found that the festival had finished up, I could walk around the harbour area and people started handing me drinks all over the shop. It was an interesting wander. FREE Drinks!
