Winter

Winter came and was white, cold and now has essentially moved on.
There was one night of snow.  That was about it.
At the same time, It snowed in the UK and Everything came to a stand-still
There is no coping.
It's been a very mild one. and maybe that's it.
(oops: but then again, who am I kidding.
Looks like the cold is coming back, with a vengeance.)

I've got March off and hope, weather permitting, to head over to Europe on Nicole.
I would love to Travel over to Australia, but am waiting to hear from the Barclay Bros' company regarding a job interview I had back in December.
Might have to head to Switzerland for "handover"

But, as with everything...we will see.

as For what I've been up to.
January was pretty quite, but I did get to Liverpool to see Niki off.
She left work here in Guernsey and is off to New Zealand for at least a couple of months, with some of her mates.

Here's hoping that I can travel somewhere nice in March

I'll write more about the job on Brecqhou when I know more.

Winter holiday

oh, what to do!

Due to a miscommunication, I ended up with 3 weeks off this month but nothing really planned.
I needed the sunshine, I needed the beach, I needed a break, I needed to Kitesurf.
but where to go?

I looked at Morocco, but the flight connections weren't any good and the accommodation was gonna cost over 900 Euros...WTF?
so, where else?

A colleague suggested Tenerife.  hey, why not.
As luck would have it, the first week, no wind "but this never happens"
Really?
anyway, there was hiking, more hiking, drinking and more drinking. a little kite surfing, although to the trained eye it probably looked like an Australian being dragged around by a kite whilst attempting to drown, unsuccessfully!

As Always, I went there with no expectations and came away pleasantly surprised with what the island had to offer and what I got done.

but at least I had fun and now feel refreshed.  Ready for some new challenges!

Next week I'm back to work for a lovely week o' nights, the seven nights of Christmas.
but before then I've got one thing to do on Friday.

End of something

Well, here we are and the riding season is at an end.  Bikes in for repair and servicing, colder, wetter weather, short days, long nights.
Planning for bigger and better rides is afoot.I've seen a couple that catch my eye.  The UK 4 Corners Gold, Gibraltar - Nordkapp 72 and the FHB 48 (Fucking, Hell and Bach).
Unfortunately the GN72 can't be ridden till I've completed another 2000 mile, extreme ride.  hence the FHB.
And yes, I'm going to ride to Fucking (Austria), Hell (Norway) and Bach (France).  Not surprisingly, this ride is through the Irish IBA.

I've plenty of time to plan and prepare for my rides, the first won't be till after the beginning of the Tour de France.
I hope to catch at least one if not two stages of the TdF in 2013, The 100th, before my ride.

But enough pipe-dreams, back to the now and the winter.
Having just completed a week of nights, I've got a couple of weeks off work, I thought I'd do something reasonably constructive with my time.  So, it's off to Tenerife.
I'm hoping to improve my kite-surfing skills and get a bit of vitamin D in the process.
Then it'll be back to reality and another week of nights.  Such is a shift-workers' lot.
I hope that you're all well at this festive time of year and your loved ones are all near, in spirit if not person.

Almost the hardest ride in the UK

Awesome week

What a Week
I have achieved much more than I expected
I had the two End2End rides verified by the IBA UK.
and I have, just today, Passed my Advanced Life Support Provider Course.
Woo Hoo, I'm once again an ALS provider.
That means that I'm well on my way to being ready for the promotion that I recently applied for.
Interviews are to be held in about 10 days.
I'm feeling really quite positive about everything.

So Awesome, I think I deserve a couple of days away.
Niki and I are going to Jersey for the weekend, sat-mon.
Should be nice to get away together, see something different and pamper ourselves.
hope you all have a great weekend.

Achieved...

All smiles, the beginning!
Tuesday, 2nd October.  Landed in Portsmouth, UK at 0630.  I proceded directly to Land's End, Cornwall. An uneventful ride of approximately 250 miles in 6 hours.
I officially began my ride after getting my receipts for food and a witness from the "Land's End Hotel"
At about half way (400 miles into the ride) it Began to rain and didn't stop, across Scotland it was cold, dark, wet and uncomfortable.  My joints ached, my back was stiff and my knees frozen.  My helmet was leaking and fogging up.  But I continued and once I reached it to the border, I knew that I'd make it.
The last 100+ miles (after Inverness) were painful.  I slowed my ride, afraid I would make a mistake or hit am animal (haggis are a constant threat to Motorcycles) or miss a turn.  Although the progress was slow, it was breathtaking, Winding hilly roads, along the cliffs, through tiny villages.
Eventually, with about 17 miles to go, I had to stop for a cigarette, I was losing my concentration and feeling nauseous.  A short break and I was good to do.  I rode on and arrived at about 0600.  Just under 18 hours, 850 miles.  But at John O'Groats there was NO-ONE, the shops were closed, the only locals I spotted got into their fishing boat and headed off into the blue yonder, no-one.
Eventually I made breakfast and at about 0800 I met a couple of lads about to start work, roofing on a construction site.  I decided to check in to the nearest hotel - "The Seaview" Less than a mile away.
After a much needed bath, I slept 10 hours straight.
That evening, when I went down to the bar for dinner, I met Martin, one of the afore-mentioned roofers and asked him to witness my arrival, which he did.
I really felt beat, exhausted and not inclined to do the return journal, the End-to-end Gold, via the M25 and London.  I wasn't able to sleep till 0400.
The next morning I was sick, probably a combination of exhaustion and Tennants.  I couldn't stomach breakfast so had a nap.  Eventually checking out at about 1200.  I made my way to "the first and Last" tourist shop, got a sticker and receipt for the beginning of the return journey.
Sometime during my nap I had decided to attempt the Gold End-to-End.  Over 1000 Miles.

The first part of the journey was indeed lovely and a pleasure to ride.  Cliff roads, villages, winding roads, tight corners, a dream.
I basically followed the same route southward until over the border into England, Penrith, where I headed South East along the A66 till the A1(M).  I then followed this road till the M25 and London.  Usually the biggest car-park in the world, it was a pleasure to ride at this stupid time of the morning when only truckers and insomniacs are awake.  I had intended to halt at Clacket Lane Services, but due to fatigue and petrol requirements, I stopped immediately before Dartmouth Bridge.  I then continued on the M25 toll the M3-A303-A30 to Land's End.
Arriving at land's end, Nothing was to open till after 1000, I arrived just before 0900.  So, after a while I made my way into the Hotel, again, had a coffee and had my documents witnessed.
Being Early, I had hoped to make it back to Poole in time to change my return Ferry.  But there had been an accident on the A30 which had to be closed.  The diversion took between 1 and 2 hours longer than expected and when I eventually got onto the road into Poole, traffic was heavy and slow.
So, I decided to stop at a hotel or B&B.  On arriving in Poole it started raining heavily and I was bloody tired.  After more than 26 hours on the bike, I just wanted to Stop.
I found a Holiday Inn-Express, got a room but no bath.  After a shower, I slept for about 5 hours and then ate and went back to bed.  The next morning I discovered that breakfast was included, Yay!
I checked out late, made it to the ferry in plenty of time and was on my way home.

It's been a hard week.  Just under 2000 miles of ironbutt and with travel to and fro, just over 2500 miles total (± 4000 kms) in 4 days.
It's been hard on my body and hard on Nicole.  My fingers and toes have altered sensation and my back is stuff from the heavy, wet bike gear.
Despite all this, I feel bloody Good.
Nicole is booked in for some work next week and I'll get her sorted.  Then Tyres, Helmet repaired, and hopefully, eventually my fingers shall return to normal.
I'm looking forward to catching up with Niki and relaxing.

End to End

Well, here's the plan.
Not that it's much of a plan
1. Finish nights tomorrow morning
2. Sleep
3. Get the over-night Ferry to the UK
4. Ride to my starting point, Land's End
5. Ride to John O'Groats
6. Pray for no rain
That's about it really.

And if it rains, just in case you were about to ask, I will get WET.

I wish you all a great week.

A While...

It has been some time since I last wrote anything in the Interwebs and thought I'd better make amends.

This year has been quiet but with some Awesome moments thrown in.
Visited Mick and Ails (et al) in France
Rode Nicole to Northern Germany for a "Mofarralley"
and also visited Jay in Kassel

I'm currently on Nights but next week am off and plan to visit the UK.
I'm hoping to complete one, if not two, Iron Butt Rides.
End-to-end, Lands End to John O'Groats.
I hope that the flood waters have run off by the time I get there, I'm sure that Nicole doesn't swim well.

The Northern and shorter route will be basically straight through.  When I return, a couple of days later, I'll take a longer route via the M25 and London.

better get to work, only 4 shifts to go.

Whoa...Finally made it.  My first dive, and on Australia Day.  What a way to celebrate.  The Underwater world is really something else.  Calm, peaceful, only the sound of yourself breathing and the ping of the machines.  hummm...
Weightlessness is truly achievable and controllable.
Although the visibility was only down to about 5-7 meters, it was amazing what there was to see under there.  Fish, individual and by the school, not really bothered by our intrusion into their world.  Quietly searching for food and hunting.  The coral just sitting there being coral.  The colours, although not spectacular today, were present, showing through with their contrast to the dull colours of surrounding rocks and sand.
And the divers, swimming back and fro, coming together/colliding silently and then slowly separating and going their own way.  Dark silhouettes in the murky water, intently exploring their new surroundings and discovering the numerous treasures near and upon the ocean floor.  All giving off the aura of professionalism due mainly to the uniformity of their attire and equipment.  Strangely autonomous!!!
I am inspired, but we will see how long it all lasts.  I would love to go far on this new found adventure and who knows... future occupation???
the next trip out is Monday, 28th Jan.  I am sure that the second outing will reveal new skills and discoveries.

There were actually 10 of us there, the 9th is taking the photo and nr. ten??? see if you can find her.

BTW... Looks like I've found a buyer for the bike.  An "Older" gentleman.  He only saw the bike on Friday and Rang last night with the news...
I'm excited now.  Ridding myself of the material ties here.  That's a big step, an important step onward, into the future.

baby mellow my mind
make me feel like a schoolboy on good time,
Jugglin' nickles and dimes,
Satisfied with the
fish on a line.

What it means, I have no idea but I now feel sad...hummm
Only 5 days to go :-)

My motto: The difference is Fashion.
The search for truth inspired by a 1970's fashion.
What can I say...
This shall have to become my travel "uniform"
The safari suit.  Leading me into the unknown.
I have been advised to dress conservatively, you can't be any more conservative than that...or???
And the best thing is...
I fly to Dubai first, then get a 12 hour stay over in a hotel and then fly on to Saudi. That means that I can drink as much as I like from Australia and get a "sober-up" sleep over in UAE.
That must have been done on purpose :-)

Sounds great to me, but 12 hours in a hotel room during the day???  Only good if there's alcohol. Rule 45 definitely applies in this instance.

As you may have been aware, or not.  I received my e-ticket today.  29th flying out and that's great. Gives me a weekend, Australia day weekend and Australia day itself.  Then off, like a frog in a sock.  Hope to get the PADI cert completed.  Should be going diving on Wednesday, out to Cook island or somewhere the like.
Now the only thing left to do is sell my motorcycle.

WANNA BUY A BIKE
ONLY RIDDEN BY AN OLD LADY, TO THE SHOPS AND CHURCH ON SUNDAYS.

I thought it was a good try!!!
I'll even leave the FOR SALE sign on if you like.
Tyres are new (only 6,000kms)

Went for a ride today to get the bike seen and to visit ben.  Although I don't think to many people will want to buy it from me if I continue to ride past them, whilst showing which way is up, with my middle finger (Wankers!!!)
But seriously, the last of the important stuff to get done before I go is to get rid of the bike.  Seeing as I finally own it outright, I have decided to dispose of it.  I guess that this decision was mainly made based on the fact that I have a 20 kg baggage allowance and that I can't take it as carry on as it contains too much Fluid.  As if I could blow up a plane with the fluids on my bike, except for the petrol.  Oh, and the brake fluid might do a bit of damage too.  Okay, and the battery fluid.
Grrrrr!!!!!!!

Anyway! As I was saying, Visited Ben today.  Seems that he's such a big-girls-blouse that playing with a one year old is too hard-core.  Turns out that he sustained a fractured rib from rough play with Grayson, at least it wasn't my fault this time.  Damn, and I was hoping to get in some quality riding and rock-climbing before I leave...hummm maybe he did it on purpose???

Looks like I'll have to concentrate on getting my PADI open water cert finished.  Lo-and-behold, it didn't rain this weekend.  Hopefully the waters are starting to clear up and visibility improving.  Should the weather remain as it is, there should be some underwater activities undertaken.

Damn, it was hot today...30 degrees and humid as hell
But when I look at Berlin, 6 and Riyadh, 11 I get to feel as though I've missed something.  Winter.  I complain about it when I'm there and complain when I'm not but, really I miss the winters of Germany.  The stark contrast between summer and winter.  The difference in the colours, bleak grey and dull winter and the colourful summer.  The need to "rug-up" and get cosy.  The constant slush underfoot when one goes out and being wary of the "black-ice"
The only jacket necessary here is the bike jacket that I wear to protect myself as I fly past those blind-inbred-recipients-of-my-directions-to-heaven whilst avoiding the odd speed camera and random police patrol.
At least with the warm weather can one ride without fear of rain, or other non-biking conditions.

Might head up Tamborine Mountain some time this week...

So there you are...more popart by me.
Except this time it is REAL fake art.
Made a trip earlier this week to the Warhol exhibition this week.  It was held at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisvegas.  5 Booths were provided for children's entertainment of which I made good use.  Along with the floating goon bladders (Whoa everything moving soooo slowly)
According to the copywrite agreement signed by GoMA, the employees have the right, and infact are obligated to, shout at any visitor who looks like they may attempt to photograph any of the exhibition.  Beware the woman near the red ring.

For those of you who are blissfully unaware, I shall be taking up a job in Saudi Arabia later this month.  So, have decided to finish my PADI course.  On Wednesday, I went to the Currumbin pool and undertook my first controlled "dive" to a depth of about 1.8 meters.
Woo-hoo, but it was certainly different.  Performing manuevers such as: removing one's gear whilst in the water, removing and replacing one's weight belt (why), cramp removal, running out of air, and then swimming 200 metres and treading water for 10 minutes without any gear (but, I'm going diving, without my gear???)  Maybe I forgot to put it on???

Unfortunately, with all the debris washed off-shore recently from the rain and floods, I'll have to wait some time before completing the course.  With visability a mere 5 metres it makes no sense to go down and perhaps would be too dangerous.  Might be attacked by a dead cow or its calf.

It's officially official. I am no longer young...
humm!!! how will this affect my life, behaviour, attitude to responsibility, usw???
Not one little bit, I should think.
I shall continue to stick it to the man, ride into the wind of authority, ignore common-sense and practicality. But hey, this is no conscious decision of mine. I shall just continue as I am and have been... The game is well under way, why change line-up now???

Speaking of change...I am now a convert.
The evil glow of the apfel now illuminates my room at night and accompanies my rantings on the abstract ideas that have very little to do with nursing, in the form of essay and assignment.
More to do with the ravings of a lunatic rather than some health professional, that amounts to the same thing, doesn't it???
anyway, think I'll drink something, when the assignment's written and sent. That'll have to be before the 28th. Have to go to a work party and celebrate my leaving work, christmas, my birthday and new year all in one...Whoa man will I ever have to drink :-) I wonder if anyone will come with me.

I was just thinking, I wonder if this is how Melinda feels and I'm not saying I feel like a woman (although I wouldn't say no), mother, wife, sister, surgeon(burns),usw. But being 35...
Nah, I feel relaxed...any more relaxed and i'd make like an ICU patient and stop breathing (hi hi)

Is 30 the new 20??? If it is then I can STILL act like a teenager, who cares??? I'll do it anyway.

better get to bed...lots of games to be mastered tomorrow.
Love y'all
and HO, HO, HO
Here's wishing you all a hairless isthmus

Not that I'm one to complain...That's why I've NEVER bought a TV
You can get the news from the internet and anything that's worth seeing is on youtube, or you can download it from somewhere, or even buy it if you're that way inclined.

Anyway, to that comment about me being a socialist...
I tend to think of myself more as a Communist:
From each according to their ability, to each according to their need. ...

Or a Social Democrat but not a bleeding French-bloody-public-servant-socialist.
More strikes that a Box of Red Heads or even David (no-I'm-not-a- northern-Wanker) Beckam, In fact he's a London Wanker.

Enough politics...
I got stuff to do...NOT sit infront of the telly and go numb.

Thursday, November 29, 2007

I was bumbling around on Faceoff (or whatever it is) and came across this:

Bumsen weg und Würfel.

Than has to be the worst German translation I ever saw...but then I thought about. Maybe it's the best and funniest I have ever seen...
I'm not sure???
Looks more like a babelfish translation.
wow, I just got the same with systran
I hope all you out there get it :-)

Well, one more week of uni...6 - 13 Dec.
I guess that I'd better think about Christmas and all that stuff
I have been lucky in recent years and not had the stress.
The decision was usually made for me
and I was usually invited into someone else's family

But in the meantime the whole world's gone mad, how can these things be???
Beating-up Tibetan Monks, uprising in Pakistan, coup in the Philippines, Terrorists in Saudi Arabia, Howard not only losing the PMship but also his seat...(insult to injury)
Me getting a 5 for both my subjects, and being single.
Unbelievable.
And I've worked at the same place nearly all year, might be time for a change.
but hey, I'm not giving anything more away than I have to. I'll probably jinx myself and be stuck here. Not that here's such a bad place but...
Now look, I know that I came over to get this ICU course thingy done, but I've since learned that I can do the rest of it externally and truth be told, I'd probably have a more exciting time in the middle of a desert on a motorcycle in a Burka.
I guess a woman in a Burka could still wear a helmet but try getting one over your Keffiyeh, no matter how cool you are, you'll never fit a helmet over it.

The silly season is upon us, well and truly.
Schoolies (the first week) has been and gone. I guess they had about 35,000 drunken teenagers down Cavill Ave. Woo-hoo. Hundreds of arrests and nothing to do with me.
If you know nothing about "Schoolies" then check out the movie "Blurred" (2002)
Classic Aussie coming-of-age stuff.

On top of that, TV.
Man...
I thought it was bad before.
Now there's National BINGO, download your bingo card and lose
Dancing with the (minor) celebrities
Farmer needs a wife (to cook, clean, shag, iron, make babies, bring up said babies, start a commune then maybe a cult, help conduct mass suicide)
Temptation (new Sale-of-the-Century)
Bert Newton's Family Feud
Australias funniest home movies
Friday night download (you guess)
Who wants to be a MULTI-MILLIONAIRE
Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?
The Abbey
The monastery
blah, blah, blah
And then all the usual crap Home & Away, Neighbours, All Saints,
That's about it really.
No time to programe anything else in.

Work's work. You win some and you lose some.
I'm still enjoying it but...
it's time for bed

Sunday, November 18, 2007

What's that you say???
well...yeah, finished the assignment today (got an extension)
Just dropped it off
so, that's it, for a couple of weeks.
I don't have to think about uni till December
Now I guess that I have time to concentrate on work...
Yeah right...work only interferes with the stuff that I really want to do
ie: stuff
Can't believe it...Nothing to do and I've got off till Friday
maybe I'll catch up with benny...maybe not.
Lots of stuff to do...
still need to sell my bike, get a new backpack, stuff
how boring does that sound, now i'm depressed
have to get out and do something

Sunday, November 04, 2007

See the worry...
No, I was gonna say that I'm worried about my studies but I haven't really started yet.
guess that I'll have to start soon.
You know when you really want something over and done with...
Na ja, This time next week I'll be back on nights and it will all be behind me.
In considering my next job...I have finally settled on the middle east.
I was looking up the particular country on the Australian site Smartraveller and "We advise you to reconsider your need to travel"
A vote of confidence in anyone's language.
Well that settles it, that's where I'm going. I must have missed the bit in the work contract about issueing the foreign nationals with PPE (Personal protective equipment) ie. body armour etc.
Perhaps it was under the section covering dress codes. Women - abaya, men - body armour.
who knows, I'll have to read through it again.
But, I don't get it.
With such a strongly worded document from the govt then one would think that it would be reflected in my monetary return. But it isn't.
I'm not JUST going there for the money. With all the squabbling and argueing going on here, I'm sure that Australia is one of the last places I really want to work after the election. Awards, rights, allowances, pay, penalties, everything being reduced.
I love working in the area that I do but I'm not in a hurry to donate my services.
I genuinely feel that out there, somewhere is the prefect job and place for mme.
Sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not really one to complain. Just a little unsettled, like loads of people at the moment.
Now I'm just bitching. Have to go to bed and try and sleep.

Can you see it???
Took a week out with Antje and we "discovered" SE Queensland and NE NSW.
Thank-you.
A great time was had by all (ie. Both)
We started our discovery tour in the Koala Center at Daisy Hill. Meeting several of the locals both in captivity and in their natural surroundings.
We visited Tamborine, Murwullumbah, O'Reilly's, Mt Warning, Byron blah, blah, blah.

Hiked to the top of Wollumbin, I completely forgot what a feat it was, 1000 meters straight up. But what a view, you are able to make out the coastline at Byron. The path has changed slightly over the years, what with repairs to the track, deviations due to damage etc. but has basically remained the same. Although our 95 minute climb was far quicker that the original 3 day trek to the summit of the "Cloud Gatherer"

We also tried to reach Witches Falls but unfortunately embarked upon this walk too late in the afternoon and twilight threatened to take away our path, we had to head back early, but were rewarded by a warm bite and cold beer in the "Irish Pub"

Also, embarked upon the "tree-top-walk". Great views and surrounded by an Australian menagerie every step of the way.

Then it was on the bike and out of the Hinterland, through the fields of sugar-cane and toward the old world of the Hippies. OK, we didn't make it to Nimbin but did bed down in good ol' Cape Byron for a couple of nights.
Walked from lighthouse to cape, searched the surrounding waters for sea-life, looked back to where we had once been (Wollumbin), Drank beer like there was no tomorrow, Shared the "Goon" of the local travellers, Clubbed and ate Fish and Chips at some stupid hour. Although being slightly less value for money than the previous "Chinese at Byron" incident, I was unfortunately not afforded the same opportunity and arrived back at the room empty-handed.

After several days of mounting the Yellow Bavarian beast I was allowed a day off from riding and remained in bed, then in the afternoon went to the beach for some more lying around, followed by re-heated chilli and then some bad pool and early to bed.

Sunday, unfortunately was Antje's last day and we had to take the "world-class" Pacific highway up to Brisbane and then get her to the Airport...allowing Antje to embark upon her 2nd adventure. Flying back to Berlin via Melbourne, Singapore, London and finally Frankfurt. Fraught with Delays and missed connections.

And now I have the Delightful task of Preparing for my next practical exam, Tomorrow, and in two weeks, assignment and Exam...as excited as ever.

Friday, October 05, 2007

bugger!!!
aim for 50% and I get 73
almost 50% more than the 50% that I need...that's like 50% too much effort
I'll try harder next time not to try so hard.
anyway, one down only 3 to go.
I guess that it's better to choose subjects I know about...the last one was Bullying
For the next I might choose...hummmmm, sleep.
Sleep and the shift worker.
The detrimental effects of lack of sleep upon the shift worker (ie. nurse)
what a great idea. Now I only need the research articles AND to reference properly
Man, I hate it when you referrence something and your lecturer corrects same, even the actual page number...
but hey, next time I will definately try not to try

I came a great step forward today, Toward my next role.
Medical, blood tests, x-rays, passport photos.
I guess the next step is to ask my current boss for a reference, as soon as I take that step there's no going back.
We'll just have to see.
Concentrate on what's left of the course and let the job stuff fall into place.

Monday, September 10, 2007

Surrounded by nothing but pieces of paper with information about ECG's, WPW syndrome, Nursing interventions, Bullying in the Workplace, discrimination, case studies, blah, blah, blah!!!
Emotional abuse!!!
Then there's Hesse :-)
Although today it took a while to understand what he was on about..bit like me, really.
I just want to have this bloody thing over and done with...
apart from writing and studying, I haven't been up to too much.
Had my first exam last week, the 60 MCQ's were ok, it's those long answer questions that stumped me. Lets hope that I did ok in the MCQ's then I should have achieved the level of

mediocre
.

Although some dictionaries accept the meaning of this word as “medium” or “average,” in fact its connotations are almost always more negative. When something is distinctly not as good as it could be, it is mediocre. If you want to say that you are an average student, don’t proclaim yourself mediocre, or you’ll convey a worse impression of yourself than you intend.

I want to achieve a high level of medocrity...
hey, if it gets me the piece of paper then so-be-it.

Anyway, mediocre is way better than the French did the other night...compared to that "achievement" mediocre is a blinding success.
Not that I want to put down those cheese-eating-surrender-monkeys. Hey, do I really need to???
But, I guess that they have got one thing right...they can have a really long shower and don't they need it, all that cheese and garlic. Stinky damn Frenchie's.
Damn, I'm getting irritable...must be the cigarettes (or lack there of)
Haven't had one in ages...8 days or so not even a sneaky one.
Not that I want to be known as a quitter. It's just while I'm here (australia) Can't get my bloody tobacco.
Everything I love is out of reach. Smokes, Bier von Faß, Frauen etc.
That will all soon change. I'l get a job in Saudi or some similar place and I won't be allowed to have any of that stuff, right now it's a choice.

anyhoo, as for Australia...

what's been happening here.

World leaders met for APEC (OPEC according to Dubya)

Little Johnny Howard has been visiting Austrian Troops (If you once again listen to Dubya)

ABC (Chasers war against everything) comedy team foiled Sydney and Federal Cops

Cops got even and beat up protesters and searched cars/vans heading for Sydney (100's of kms out of Sydney)

Brit did it again, oops!!!

France lost (sorry had to mention it again) and Australia won

Australian Sportsmen encouraged to take drugs, not actively but we'll only check you on Monday's and hey, if you hear of anyone taking drugs...we really don't want to know about it.

Man, makes those cycling drug testers look like right fascists, how dare they test people randomly and not inform the athlete beforehand.

Anyone would think that being a sportsman meant commitment or something...

I'd better stop ranting, my beer's gettin warm.

Love ya all

The footprints of a leaf.

With an apprenticeship in the film industry Fabian was able to put his learned skills to good use.

So, as everyone else was looking forward to the prospect of going to work after the weekend, I was heading north, in th edirection of the world's largest sand island. That's right, 4 days on Fraser lay ahead of me, as opposed to 4 or 5 repeated versions of the daily grind.

What can I say???

The fishermen were all there and what a spectacle that made. Literally hundreds of men from near and far standing with the swell upto their waist, paying hommage to Neptune and reaping the benefits tha the pacific had to offer. ie: Taylor. Gathering at every gutter and sand-bar to practice their faith. And then again in the evenings, thanking the gods for their catch by raising their cans to the skies and taking in the copious amounts of the amber fluid.

Religious Fanatics...I just don't understand them.
But on that note...I was there to introduce my passengers (§ from the father-land) to the practice of praying to the gods of sand.
The practice begins with a type of baptism, which can only begin upon the "bogging" of their transport. After this, all shall gather either infront of or behind said vehicle, place their hands upon the vehicle and pray, pray, pray. If all pray hard enough then, they shall be rewarded by a shower of sand (if praying particularly hard the sand shall reach places they didn't know existed).
Although I thought they were all doing quite well, the sand gods didn't agree with me. My new convertees were required to practice their faith again and again. Each time being rewarded sufficiently with said sand. I must say that I found the sand gods to be quite generous with the delivery of the sand, especially on their last attempt.
Although, should any of them return to the island I am quite sure that the gods shall require them to again demonstrate their faith.
Luckily for me, I have been a long-time convert and didn't have to prove my faith (also I was the driver)
All in all, it was a great week, relaxing but busy. Lake Wabby, perched between a sandblow and a eucalypt forest, was just super, Lake Mackenzie, it's brilliant white-put-on-your-sunnies-or-burn-out-your-eyes sand and super clear/unbelievable blue water still the most amazing place for a quick dip.
We also took a trip north up to Indian Head. From this vantage point we were able to spy a school of big fishy-things (at least 15 and about 1.5 - 2 m), a school of dolphins and at least 2 Whales. What a sight!!!
Just around the corner I did see the strangest thing, a Porsche Cayenne S. What a sight.
I must say phone, e-mail, internet, news, radio. I did not miss. What a great feeling to be away and unable to be contacted. The only contact possible was face-to-face. most unusual in this age of hi-tech.
But hey, now I'm back and off to work tomorrow.
Thanks to Nina, Fredi and Fabian for a great week. Hope you all had a great time too.
So, how was your week???

So anyway, there I was riding south to Kirra, look left and what do I see??? Whoa!!! what the hell is that, looks a lot like an oil platform, the likes of which are rarely seen in these parts.

Ok, Norway, the Gulf, hey, anywhere north of 0°.

But here, in s-e Qld.

What is this thing???

But then I started to think, yes it happens every now and again... What is most precious to us here???

Yes, yes, Petrol. I know!!! but you can actually live without a car (now a motorcycle is another matter) and yes I'll get onto the subject of personal transport vs. public transport later.

What you see here is the face of the future in Australia. Or perhaps the future of the face of Australia (Australia's future face???)

De-salinifinication (or some bloody thing)

That's right, this monstrosity is a part of a giant thingy that is somehow able to remove the salt from the sea-water, or is it the other way round???

Either way bloody ugly, isn't it? and if I lived where I could see it then it would probably bother me, but seeing as I don't live anywhere near the bloody thing then I really don't give a crap.

Why should I???

Damn...

And for that matter, if the climate changes drastically over the next 100 years...why do I give a Poo??? I hope I'll be dead

Yeah...knowing my luck they'll come up with a drug that will make us all immortal and I will have to give a crap...

how very...Pedestrian (scheesh!!!)

not that I got anything against living...just not forever. I can't keep up with that much fashion (I can't bloody keep up with fashion in this lifetime, let alone an endless one.

what a disaster that would be...

Dying saves fashion...can you imaging how many fashion disasters/victims there would be if we lived forever.

I'd have to commit suicide, whilst wearing a pair of very cool shorts (of course/or perhaps a safari suit)

Speaking of which...

AAhhhhh!!! What, I ask you, would Sydney be without the harbour bridge and Opera House. Anothe big ugly city positioned on a harbour. What makes it better than other cities of the same size and stature??? I don't know, but it really is different to Brisbane and the Gold Coast and Berlin (etc.)
And hey, for a week it was pretty good to me. Although I found that the public transport was pretty expensive, or not, depending on what you're used to.
I guess that I'm too used to having my bike and not having to adhere to any plans/timetables.
Also being as it lies 1000 kms south of Brisbane, I held the mis-conception that I could ride it in less than 2 half days. But with the partial Pacific Highway, said "Main" road between Brisvegas and Sydney, constantly interrupted by villages, roadworks, speed-zones, roadworks, detours due to closed roads (the floods are history man, get over it) and of course more roadworks. The short thousand kms becomes a marathon. I would also like to add that despite being in australia, I have discovered temperatures similar to those of Europe. No, not Greece etc at the moment (45° plus) but I am talking about cold. Freeze your arse off cold, White fingers and toes cold. The likes of which I hadn't experienced in quite a while. I guess it was close to 0° out there, and what with the "wind-chill" factor. My little pinkies didn't enjoy the ride so much. Despite my newest addition to the Sebastabator family facial deformity, I was still cold. I had hoped that the mO would protect my body as the slain creature was used to by Han Solo to protect ánd revive Luke. Unfortunately all it did was cause me to have a mouth full of cold and wet hair, reminding me of a certain interlude overseas with a young lady.
But hey, I knew there was a reason my bike comes with heated grips and ...well, that's about it really. I decided against the ABS (It don't get Icy here) and the computer (who needs all that malarky?)
But hey, despite the cold and the shitty roads, when the sun shone, it was a great ride. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Maybe next time Melbourne or Canberra or both (Maybe I'll wait till summer though) I like it up here in our mediocre winter, wearing jumpers if I wish, not because I HAVE to.
Anyway, back to Sydney, I did catch up with a few friends. Katrina and her sisters family, in the south-east, near Randwick raceway. And Henning, Larissa and Antje, in Collaroy. The two places sparated only by the world's biggest Harbour and 40 kms of road. If it was Summer, who knows, maybe I would have swum it :-)
We did the manditory Sydney things. Aquarium, Tangaloma Zoo, Hyde park, Ferrry ride, Bridge, tunnel, going for a mid-night stroll on the beach (despite the cold, cold sand) etc.
Well that's about it for my stay.
Oh, apart from the Hostel, it was impressive, big, near Dee Why, across the road from the Beach (great in summer), no curfews (that affected us) big kitchen with loads of room and a Fridge that was something else (okay, okay it was a cold room), the beds were...beds.
Well, apart from all the bitchin' all-in-all it was a pretty groovy trip.
As I look out the window and smile, the sky's blue and the sun is shining.
I might just go for a ride and visit the Cooks.

You may think that seven 12 hour shifts in a week is not detrimental to one's health. Well think again. After one week of solid night duty, I have grown a Moustache (oberlippenbart) got myself some great oversize sunglasses and plan to ride my motorcycle to Sydney in the next few days.
It wasn't constanty saving lives by holding the grimm-reaper at bay, as many of you out there in blogger-land might think. it did have it's moments of comic-relief. Attempting to navigate the ward in a wheelchair and accomplish the many tasks required of me at 2 in the morning, whilst attempting to accertain whether or not my place of work is in-fact wheelchair-friendly. Which I, unfortunately, have proven NOT to be the case.
Work (loosely termed) was Punctuated briefly by periods of Le Tour de Doping. Aargh, sorry, the newly reformed and clean Le Tour de France. So clean that all propaganda slips off it's shiny surface. Who bloody cares, really? With or without drugs, it's still a bloody punishing race. Pushing the Human body to it's limits and sometimes beyond. Young guys having "un-forseen" heart attacks, strokes, DVTs, TIAs etc. Hey, like they say, "You gotta break a few eggs to make an omlette"
Where was I??? Oh yeah, my newfound "Porno"look. Why? Jason made a bet with me. "Let's see who has the best Mo after a month." Sounds like a good enough reason to me.
Anyhoo, now that I've made sweeping, unsubstantiated, unbelievable and mis-informed statements about certian well-paid international superstars, I might go to bed.
Enjoy your week, peeps

Abwarten und Tee trinken.

Well peeps. I'm off to work soon and because of that interruption shall be away for about a week. Oh, that coupled with the fact that Bugs has dial-up *shudder*
A most exciting week is anticipated.
Apparently, Allamanda has become the "Neoro-central" of SE Qld. Man I tell you, Neuro isn't my thing. But then again, opportunity to learn...Write letters...read...think...sleep...do stuff (yeah right)

7 Nights. You might think that when one works nights one has plenty of time to "do stuff" Think again. I work 12hour shifts. When one gets to bed after catching up on the news, cycling for an hour or so. Don't forget 3 days to the start of the Tour de France, highlights must be seen.
With all that going on, I really don't see when I'll get much time to sleep. But, sleep I must. Without that my body shall begin to decay, delerium shall set in resulting in madness. Hummm...Have I not experienced this type of thing before? (Everyday?)
Na ja, all you night sleeping-day waking people, have a great week

hey, a part-time student I now am. What does that mean? I'm only half qualified to lie in bed all day doing nothing, or does it mean that I'm twice as qualified to do half as much???
hummm...
I do know this, I can get stuff at a student discount :-)´such as... Movie tickets and shit.
I don't know but I'm sure it has it's advantages.
So what am I a student of? I hear you ask.
I have enrolled in a "Masters of Advanced Practice" (Nursing)...Whoa!!! I hear you exclaim. But stopp, Hammertime!!! It's not what you think. I'm not that motivated and am not gonna stick around for the whole thing, Bugger that. What, me with a masters??? MY attention span isn't that long. I'll stick with it for about a year and exit with a Graduate Certificate in Critical Care Nursing. What does this all mean???
1. I get to spend about 1% of my pay (okay, okay maybe a bit less)
2. Sit around chit-chatting with nurses from other hospitals and disciplines (Now we're seeing the up-side)
3. Stress myself with stuff like assignments, exams, presentions (I thought powerpoint was for e-mail attachments and nudity!!!)
4. Act like a student, with no responsibilities or accountability (Alright, give justification for...)
5. to eventually increase ny pay by about 1% (Good investment I hear you say)
6. Justify and fast-track ICU applications to foreign lands (that's right ultimate goal - TRAVEL)
Scary, I actually have now set myself a goal that seems achievable and realistic. And to top it all off have started the ball rolling, Und ab!!!
26 of July I get to find what it's all about :-)
Until then, I have to persuade people that I'm practicing to be a real student.

So here I am and I've been on the search for the perfect appartment. I guess that the one pictured to your right would be just fine. I mean It has everything I need, a place to sit and drink beer, a table on which I can stand my beer, a fridge that can cool my beer and plenty of storage for my beer. And to top it all off the Beer's Flensburger, one of my favourites.
Now look, if any of you out there in the great big world happen to find this appartment before I come across it then I would appreciate it if you couuld let me know. Living at home with mum and dad has cramped my style a little. There's really not enough beer in my life. This is terrible. I mean really, there has to be a little beer in everyone's life, doesn't there?
Speaking of beer, I have been reduced to drinking the bad good stuff, Bitburger. I guess it's ok, but would seldom drink it in Germany, sometimes from tap (when there was nothing else available).
Now, I'm just dreaming of beer, Jever, Schultheiss, König, Berliner Kindl, Bitburger, Erdinger, Becks (Becks Gold, Lemon etc.), Clausthaler, Rotkappchen, DAB, Einbecker, Diebels, Samuel Adams, Effez, Grolsch, Köstritzer, Licher, Martini, Hasseroder, Warsteiner and that's just the first blick. Imagine if I'd had a think about it.
Anyway, I'd better be off. All this talk of beer has made me thirsty.
The next round's on me

Well, like I'm not saying that I'm unfit but...

I guess that with an average HR of 109 and Max. of 171 I would suggest that I'm not exactly fit.

Went Riding on Monday with Ben. Guess that we did about 25 kms or so. Plan to head off tomorrow, too. I hope that we can keep it up. Maybe that'll increase my concentration and attention span. but hey, I sincerely doubt that it'll make me any more attractive to girls. What with the skinny legs, tight fitting lycra, functionality not fashion (or is it?), gaudy colours, etc.

but hey. I haven't seen anyone else in Brisbane with this Tricot. I just can't work out if they're smiling with or at me???
Either way, I just don't care.
It's for the love of the sport.

I hear that my good friend Herr Crisis is again playing (has Played) in Kassel. When any of you speak with him, please let him know that I said hi, "Hi Chris"
Pity I missed him and Christine, I guess it's a long way to come for a gig.

The week-end was a bit of a non-event. Worked Thursday night & 12 hr shifts Sat &Sun. Then Monday, got off to a great start. Got up, was cold. Ate Breaky, was full. Rode motorcycle, was ok. Met with Police, was busted. Got ticket, was sadened. Went cycling, was envigorating. Visited Grandfather's ashes, war Gedankenvoll. Didn't smoke, had a short fuse. It's getting better.

It looks like I'm giving up smoking. Why??? I have no idea. Kein Bock mehr. I'm too lazy to even try quiting smoking, I just can't be bothered to go out and buy Tobacco. How's that for Apathy??? We'll see how it goes.

Welcome to the world of Translation by Babelfish. I have discovered, courtesy Benjamin Cook, Perhaps it is the origin of "Yoda Speak", who knows. But Benny, when you take the time to look and carefully read your "translation" it does make sense. Perhaps you need to know the context of the original. Ask me, I'll tell you.

anyway, looks like the rain's finished for the time-being. Having recieved, over the previous 24 hours more rain than the last 10 years. Yesterday I made the fatal mistake of trading the bike (as yet to be named) for a 4WD, embarking upon my journey into Brisbane. It would appear that with the Drought people have forgotten how to drive in the wet and that roads do become slipery when it rains, causing cars to slide when the brakes are applied, especially into one-another. Thus, causing traffic congestion and hold-up's. Instead of what should have been a 20 min journey, with delays etc. it was incrased to about an hour. If only I had taken the bike[sigh]. Trading the wetness of the bike for the warmth and dryness of the car I paid the price with my time.
As a bike rider (Bisbane car driver interpretation: mad, lane changing/spliting/filtering, speeding, agressive, easily and quickly incensed, impatient, loony on 2 wheels with total disregard for other road users who comes out of no-where and disappears just as quickly) it becomes increasingly frustrating to drive a car. I relish the freedom of the bike. Being able to change direction with minimal prior planning, avoiding the necessity to sit, for hours on end, in ever increasing "Stau" traffic. Next time it rains I think I'll just don my wet-weather gear and brave the torrential down-pour. Mind you, given the current weather conditions in Australia, that could be qute a while away. but hey, you never know!
Just incase, I'll be carrying my water-proofs with me whenever I go any substantial distance. To ward off the dreaded precipation.

Hummm...Was machen wir dann???

Oh my (sigh)

Well, we're (Ben and I) are free of any responsibilities today and are about to embark upon a trip to Laidley.

"Where is Laidley?", I hear you ask. Way, Way, Way outback. That's right. We're heading out there to catch up with Mr Les.

We have made our plans and should be heading off at the first reduction of the horrendous "Peak-hour-traffic". Leider, I have to travel into town before we travel out of town.
Now that I look at the map, it doesn't look all that "outback" but really, it is.
If I'm not back in a week then call a rescue team together and tell them where we were headed, "Les' Place" Maybe they can find us. Although, When I looked up Les' place (multiple spellings) on Google Earth, I couldn't find it...Hummmm Strange.

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

The soft, warm, first few hours are all I see of each day through the windows of the Intensive Care Unit. That and the 30 mins travel to and from work on my bike. Usually filled with discontentment and disgust at the driving skills of others (or lack there of). Closely followed by my exasperation and total disregard for the speed limit, for about 10 mins.

My days are filled with sleep and at night, I work. Yes, the life of night-duty. Usually 6 nights strung together. Why so many??? Rhythm, continuity, my sanity (believe it or not), time to catch up on some reading and maybe a little bit of study thrown in.
Although, by the last night I'm feeling it. I'm now ready for my days off. Oh, did I mention that I get more days off as well. 6 this week, and before my nights I think I had something like 11.
aah yes, all this night-duty does have it's advantages.
Must be off, dinner soon and then work. Have a great week, Y'all

Außer bier, wir haben auch Kubb Gespielt. Eigentlich es ist Schwedische Stock wurfen.

That's right. Spent our time throwing sticks at other sticks. i.e.: Kubb. Swedish, Viking game. He who knocks over the most sticks is the winner, but only after he knocks over the king stick himself (pictured with a red crown). Kind of a cross between Chess and Boule, requiring the accuracy of a sniper.

Unfortunately, no points are scored for contact with your opponents or stupid spectators, who insist on walking through the field of play; which I might add is marked by the Kubb at either end of the field and players trying to stare at and psych-out their opponents. It is often the experience of this author that when one plays an unfamiliar game in a public park one acquires spectators. Naturally!!! But in New Farm Park the "Spectators" were downright scared. Although a few did ask about it, no-one asked the details nor if they could join in. Perhaps it looked too complicated for the "Sunday afternoon strolling crowd", maybe they were frightened by the prospect of being not only allowed but, dare I say, ENCOURAGED to throw sticks with a purpose. Or perhaps they were frightened off by two 30+ Australian males, wearing baseball caps getting all excited in a public place, brandishing offensive pieces of wood that quite resembled batons. I'm quite surprised that we weren't asked to "Move-on" as we did pick a most strange place to play our game...in front of the public conveniences.

I guess we shall never know. But I will say this: The Germans are said to be cold and stand-offish but they would ask to be included in this strange outdoor ritual. Does that mean that they are more open, at ease with themselves, comfortable with strangers, able to spot a foreigner at 10 paces, What does it mean??? I guess that I'll have to study this phenomenon more in depth.

I assure you, I shall come up with an answer.

Here's a beer, just for Benny.
And just for good luck there's the Bierschlampe (no offence meant Dani) who gave me the Bier.
German Bier, Reinheitsgebot and all that stuff.
God, I could go on about Bier all night but instead I think I'll just go home and drink one.
Home: is where the Bier is.
And don't you forget it.
The only problem with Bier...Who am I kidding!!!
Look, I'd like to sit here and write more but Bier is calling.
Talk soon and
una más cerveza por favor!!!

What did one cow say to the other cow...

Ich wollte was interesant sagen aber ich habe es bloß vergessen...naja

Wunsche euch einen schönen wochenende.

So anyway. There I was heading down the coast (as you do) and thought to myself "Think I'll ride Tamborine" and I did. I guess that I'm the lucky one. Able to take that ride whenever I want and can justify it as it "really is" on my way to work.
Supposed to be getting on for Winter. 24 degrees etc. brrr!!! Bit chilly.
I guess the ride was a bit of a celebration (it always is) I've been accepted into uni. July I start at Griffith, GC Campus. Masters of Nursing. Big title for a course I"m only gonna do the first half of. Just for the Critical Care/Emerency part.
Just I thought I'd let you know and share the picture.

The good thing with 4 minute showers is...
Who the hell am I kidding!!! There is no advantage.
I guess it just gives me that little bit more motivation to get ty studying done and get a move on to somewhere with more water, like...the desert (for example)
Anyway, I wanted to do a bit of shopping yesterday and so went to "amazon.com.au" Are you freakin' kidding. No such address...FCUK
So to get my stuff done had to log onto amazon.de and amazon.com.
Damn Australia get a move on. And to top things off, I'm having to rely on dial-up.
I didn't know that existed anymore...well I did really but I just had hoped.
better get myself ready for another night of saving lives and stuff

Longest drought in History, in the Driest Country/Continent on Earth. Yet what can I see, Rain clouds and Sea.
The rain does fall, occasionally. But not enough and not in the right areas, it seems tragic that the water that does fall can't be collected.
hummmm...
I shall never again have a bad word to describe my recollections of the time spent in rainy Manchester.
Na ja, It's ALWAYS Greener. As they say.
Cold today (mid - high 20's), sunny, blue skies. Great for...well, just about anything that you care to think of. And I can think of a load of things.
Better get to bed...have to prepare myself for more perfect weather tomorrow
LG Sebastian

Sunday, April 15, 2007

Damn...
Well now it has all gotten serious. We are no longer pissing about with a little bit of water restriction but have the full blown level 5
140 litres per day... How much do you use???
no Washing cars...4 minute showers, etc. etc.
water theft has gone up... More precious than petrol, currently at $1.20 per litre.
Cheaper than the UK, France, Germany, Scotland and other assorted European countries. We are still making a huge song and dance about it. If you don't like it then drive something bloody cheaper, I know I do. And it's more bloody fun, too.
I guess that we won't be cleaning the streets as in the large Western European cities. In Berlin they drive around with a huge water truck and wash the streets. In Paris I believe they just open the fire hydrants, flood the streets and hope it all washes all the crap down the drain, and believe me there's a lot of crap in Paris. Mick will back me up on that one.
So, the driest place on earth just got drier (I'm talking about Australia)
No half-hour shorers for you Mr Doyle. Unless you get one of those new water-saving-shower-head-thingy's. You know the type. You turn them on and have to move around the shower to get yourself all wet, because it lets out such a tiny stream of water. Guess that's where I have one over the fat people of teh world.
Ahhh, the sweet memory of a bath. I had one in Berlin. Used it on occasion too, except when it wasn't freezing and I didn"t mind only haldf a path of warm water. I still can't understand getting a hot water system that held half the volume of the bath??? explain that to me???
Maybe it was like a prototype for Australia. Making it so inconvienant to have a bath that you just didn't bother....Sweet memories...
by the way, work's good. Saving lives and all that...
Alamanda Private hosp, Southport, ICU. Not too stressful, 25 hrs a week + O.T. Hope to begin the ICU course in a few months. Guess I"ll have to complete the application form and get it back, All in good time.
Oh, is that the time already? Have to get to bed. helping a student nurse with an assignment tomorrow, how do I get myself into these situations.
Now I'm just babbling. Better go
LG

Saturday, April 07, 2007

Wow,
Back in Australia for nearly 3 months.
About as long as Mick and Ails have been pregnant.
here are so many thingy's in Australia that really are starting to piss me off
Lack of things that are commonplace in Germany (I know, I'm in Australia now)
ie: selection of cheeses, good beer, Spirits, Motorcycle accessories, open speed-limits, Autobahns, Pubs (worth drinking in), Internet access (I know, People tell me we have it here...but what about decent speed or size), good beer, Winter(ok, not really), Bread, people able to to get a job done (on time without breaking all your SHIT), STRUCTURE.
Ok, ok. I've had my bitch.
The bike's great :-) Took a ride up to springbrook the other day. Grandma said to me "the road's terrible, all windy and hilly" I was up there in a second. Probably get up to Tamborine later today. Oh yeah. Happy Easter all you Heathens
